Farmers in Georgetown are being invited to apply for grants that will help subsidize the costs of replacing the light bulbs in their poultry houses with LED bulbs. An initiative of the Delaware Electric Co-Operative, approximately 60 poultry farms are expected to receive the grants. The grants will enable the farmers to make massive savings as it will charge them just $7 instead of the average $35 for each LED and that’s not to mention the long-term savings the farmers will make in energy bills.

The Delaware Electric Co-operative spokesman Jeremy Tucker said the motivation behind the grant program was to enable the farmers taking part to save substantial amounts on their energy bills. Tucker said: “The idea is to lower the cost to farmers. We think this is obviously a good thing; $7 is really cheap for lights, and they can save 80% in energy costs”. Tucker certainly isn’t wrong. A study by the University of Arkansas revealed that a poultry house which produces six flocks of chickens annually would save an average of $983 each year in energy costs if using LEDs in place of traditional light bulbs.

The poultry farmers were obviously thrilled with the programme. Bill Satterfield, executive director of the Delmarva Poultry Industry said of the initiative: “I think it will be very helpful. Electricity is the largest operating cost that most chicken farms have. There has been a lot of interest in alternative types of lighting for chicken houses for years”.  The farmers’ interest in the scheme is not purely financial either but also environmental. Satterfield explained that another reason behind the enthusiasm for the programme is that concerns about environmental awareness are never far from farmers’ minds and so a switch to more environmental lighting obviously appeals. Satterfield said: “I think it’s two-fold. One, save money, that’s the bottom line. But they’re also demonstrating that they’re doing things in an environmentally sound way”.

Both the environmental and cost benefits of LEDs are unmistakeable and it has the farmers involved in the scheme extremely excited as Mack McCary, a poultry farmer in the area revealed: “I would be surprised if that wasn’t sold out in a matter of minutes. Every meeting we have about lighting is jam-packed. These farmers are like, ‘Wow, this is unbelievable’. I’m sure they’re going to jump on it like white on rice. They’ll sell out in no time”.

Dimmable LED bulbs can be dimmed using two kinds of dimming methods; potentiometer and PWM. There are special considerations to be made because of the fact that LED lights function differently.

A potentiometer can be connected to dimmable LED bulbs GU10 and by varying the settings on the potentiometer, you can vary the brightness of the bulbs. So what exactly is a potentiometer and what does it do? Well, as the name suggests, a potentiometer varies the potential difference, more commonly known as voltage. Potentiometers are commonly employed in electronic devices. We can see potentiometers in devices where they have to control intensity of current, like in volume control and ceiling fan regulators. Dimmable LED bulbs can also be controlled using potentiometers, but the special consideration to be made here is that the voltage range has to be very precise. According to Ohm’s law, current is directly proportional to voltage. Simply put, if you double the voltage, current will also double. If you triple the voltage, the current will also be threefold. But this law does not hold good for diodes. The current variation here is exponential. That means in dimmable LED bulbs, even a small change in voltage can result in a drastic change in current flow. This means that the voltage here has to be regulated very carefully and precisely. And the potentiometer can be used for only one kind of LED lights, as different lights can react differently.

Another method of dimming LED lights is the PWM or Pulse Width Modulation method. Here, the dimmable LED bulbs are dimmed by altering the frequency of the input current. Even in this, there are two subdivisions– leading edge and trailing edge. Often, lights and dimmers are available separately and this means that you might have to check for compatibility because LED light settings have to be especially accurate. A non-compatible dimmer can destroy your LED lighting.

Dimmable LED bulbs have to be dimmed using technology that is quite different from conventional lighting. And conventional lighting here refers to incandescent and fluorescent lights. It is even very distinct from CFL lights. LED means light emitting diode. A diode is a semiconductor device that has a lot of applications in electronics and high-technology. It is not too different from a transistor. Lighting is one of the more recent applications and dimmable LED bulbs are also being developed for ambient lighting purposes. LED lights were initially small and weak and their application was limited to pilot lamps in electronic circuits. But as technology developed, they started to get brighter and more powerful and now they can be used for ambient lighting and trends indicate that they might eventually replace bulbs and fluorescent lights and become the lighting technology of the future.

When it comes to dimmable LED bulbs GU10, they cannot be dimmed like you would dim a bulb or a fluorescent light. There are two commonly employed methods used to dim LED lights – analogue and PWM or Pulse Width Modulation. Analogue is more or less similar to dimming of conventional bulbs and fluorescent lights, but there are special considerations to be made while using LEDs. The dimming is done using a device known as a potentiometer.
